Okay, So Mojo Occasionally Gets Her Way...Submitted by mojo on Tue, 01/26/2010 - 5:44am
This weekend's sickie-poo movie fest was not all sci-fi garbage. Occasionally the Favorite Husband picks things that seem to be Just For Mojo. Sure, he claims he likes them too--only not publicly, so he doesn't have to turn in his He-Man card--but sometimes I think he's just being kind and indulgent. Not that I'd ever complain about such mundane things as the quiet kindnesses of married life. To the contrary, I firmly believe it is these tiny things that are the backbone to just about any decent relationship. But once more I digress. Anyway, among his manly choices was The Sound of Music, which we have both seen a gazillion times, and after viewing it he fell asleep, being sick and all, and I ended up watching the documentaries about it. Because as I've said before, I rather like watching the special features, whereas he does not seem to enjoy them all that much. And this one--I think it's for the 40th anniversary release of the movie--I haven't actually watched in a few years. And one of the things they mentioned while discussing the casting of Julie Andrews is, a couple of years before filming The Sound of Music, she had done one of her television specials with Carol Burnett, and one of the sketches was the two of them TOTALLY MOCKING the Trapp Family Singers. Who were apparently quite popular at the time, being the late fifties or early sixties. And one of the things my Favorite Husband merely tolerates about the goddess Mojo is, if we are watching a movie or something on TV, and someone says something or something is brought up that strikes Mojo's fancy, she will grab her laptop and look something up. Right in the middle of the movie. Assuming it's dull enough, that is--a really good movie will have me watching all the way through, but that's rather rare. So I hear about Julie Andrews making fun of the Trapp Family Singers, and I think to myself, hmmmm, I wonder if YouTube would have that. And sure enough, it did. It's a little tedious, but every now and then they cut away to Carol Burnett, who is ABSOLUTELY HYSTERICAL.
And just in case you've always wanted to know more about the REAL Maria von Trapp--her family is very quick to inform the public "she was NOT Julie Andrews" but pretty much an unstoppable force of nature who was prone to occasional temper tantrums to get her way--here's two minutes of her on a Julie Andrews TV special. She's on her best behavior, of course, and the two of them sing--and boy, the lady's still got a set of pipes on her! |
