I realized this morning that my poor Favorite Husband has been brooding since the weekend. We saw Slumdog Millionaire, which is sort of a feel-good fairy tale set within the awful slums of Mumbai, which look particularly bad to middle-class Americans who lead their sheltered lives and who whine and complain about the miserable horror of their lives when they don't get enough spicy sauce on their sushi. (Okay, so that's Mojo, not him.) And what has he been brooding about, Mojo wonders along with you? Well, it never occurred to the sensitive fellow that there are people in this world who will purposefully maim children to make them more "beggable". Which is an observation made during the course of the movie, despite its general "feel-good" fluffiness. It upset him much more than the idea that one could be tortured for cheating on a stupid television game show, which is another less-than-feel-good revelation over the course of the movie. Assuming everything is not an exaggeration, which not knowing all that much about India it could be. Mojo chooses not to seriously derive her cultural understandings from Hollywood movies if she can help it, but at least she has been aware for some time of the awful depths some people will go to make money, including the various nefarious things monsters do to children. My Favorite Husband, for all of his worldliness, never thought of that particular travesty as really happening before, the poor fellow. Or the lucky fellow, I suppose. Yep, I said it before and I'll say it again. Mojo leads a charmed life. Far, far away from some of the utter nastiness in this world. And for that, I'm eternally grateful. Mojo Reply |
